So recently while traveling I found myself in a situation that wasn't ideal for my goals. So I thought I would make a post to show you guys how I made that best out of a bad situation.
If I was traveling alone it would be easier for me because when I got to my destination I would find a grocery store and pick up things like greek yogurt, protein bars, cheese, etc.. Anything portable & easy. HOWEVER in my recent trip to NASCAR that was not the case. The closest thing a vegetable was fried and EVERYTHING was jumbo sized. Also I was with other people that wanted to eat out. So here in lies the challenge
In my opinion your best option is chain restaurants. I HATE to say that!!!! I like supporting whole in the wall, mom and pop shops but sometimes you have got to do it. So why do I say go to chains? 1. They are all over the country 2. They will have their nutritional information! Which is a big deal because then you know how much your are consuming. Also a lot of chains now have some form of "light" or "fit" menu.
So here is what I did for my day at the races:
Breakfast: At IHOP. I ordered off the Simple & Fit menu. I got 2 Whole Wheat Pancakes topped with Banana Slices, Egg Beaters, & 2 pieced of Turkey Bacon. All that food added up to 460 calories. Note that I did not use syrup however they do have a sugar free option.
Lunch: For lunch I got a Subway sandwich. It was a 6 inch Turkey on 9 Grain Whole Wheat with Provolone cheese. Then it was topped with cucumber, green peppers, onion, banana peppers, pickles, olives with light mayo and mustard. That equaled 380 calories.
Snack: At Subway I made it a meal and got the apple slices with the low fat milk. I saved these to eat as my snack for the day. It clocked in at 165 calories.
Dinner: For the last meal we were in a bit of a rush because we just wanted to get home so we stopped at Panera. I got the You Pick Two with Broccoli Cheddar Soup and a Caesar Salad for a total of 380 calories.
So my day totaled 1,385 calories! I will say it wasn't easy with everyone around me eat nachos, fries, etc. but it was TOTALLY worth it. I was never hungry. Although I know that these food are not 100% healthy or perfect. I know they are high in sodium, fat, carbs, etc. Sometimes you just have to deal with what you have got and this is better then the race food
but SERIOUSLY look at all the food I ate for 1,385 calories.
Happy travels!!
