Unless I am in a hurry I always try & make me own Marinara Sauce. I find not only does it taste better but it is a lot healthier for me. My own sauce tends to be lower in sodium & sugar.
Makes 7 (1/2 cup) servings & 3 1/2 cups in totalIngredients:
1 cup chopped yellow onion
2 tbsp freshly chopped garlic
1 (28oz) can crushed tomatoes (I used Natural Directions)
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp tomato paste with no salt added (I used Natural Directions)
2 tsp organic honey (I used Natural Directions)
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
Optional: adding 3/4 cup sliced mushrooms
Directions:
1. Spray medium sauce pan with cooking spray & place on medium heat.
2.Then add the onion & garlic & cook until tender, not brown. About 4-6 minutes
3. Reduce heat to low & stir in tomatoes, water, tomato paste, honey, oregano, basil, & pepper flakes until combine.
4. Cover & cook remembering to stir occasionally for at least 1 hour.
