Holiday Survival Guide



<-----That statement is SO true but it is soo hard especially during the holiday season!! 

With this post I am not going to be rewriting the books of dieting or being healthy. These are just some of the things that help me not over indulge and put on that extra winter layer of fat that no one wants.

The first place to start is WHY. Why are the winter holiday months exceptionally difficult to shed those pounds and make those muscles pop? I am going to tell you how to turn those why's into positive how's so that you can keep of your physiqu and still have your fun!

1. When it's cold we get lazy. I mean who doesn't like to curl up by a fire, pop in a movie with a bowl of pop corn, & drink hot coco all day? Being more sedentary makes you burn less calories. It's okay to have a good cuddle sesh but you need balance. If it is your rest day but you are like me and you need to much while you watch choose healthier options. Like hot coco with water and no marshmallows or my healthier popcorn recipe. Or find a way to do something during the movie. As example if you google "Harry Potter workout" you will find workouts that people have created that you can do while you watch the movie. Here is an example:


A spell is cast..........................................................................10 jumping jacks 
Anyone is awarded points.................................................................10 squats 
Points are taken away.......................................................................10 lunges 
Hagrid says “I shouldn’t have said that”.....................................50 punches 
A painting talks................................................................................15 crunches

A ghost talks...................................................................................30 jump ropes 
The golden snitch is shown.........................................................20 high knees


You get the idea. You can even create your own for any movie, tv show, football game, commercials etc. Here is a link that has tons of movie workouts! 

Or if you like to spend hours on your computer make a workout out of it!! The options are endless just get that blood pumping. (When you are done reading post I want 20 jumping jacks).

2. Family get togethers and parties. During this time of year they are more like feasts. So my first tip is before the eating begins make sure you have eaten breakfast so that you will not be famished. Also drink a bottle of water before even picking up a plate. This way you will feel fuller and will eat less. If there is a table if finger foods do not stand and talk near it. You will mindlessly reach for food and you will quickly rack up the number of calories you have consumed.

This is probably my MOST important tip/trick. When you do pink up the plate pick up the plate choose the smallest plate possible! I say this again and again but this is huge! Why? Well first for the obvious reason it holds less food therefore you will put less food on it. This will help you from over eating. You will take less food and the plate will look full so you will not feel like you are not eating enough. If you were to put that same amount of food onto the bigger plate it would look empty. So you would probably pile more food onto it!!

After eating your first plate wait 15 minutes before heading back to seconds (if you need them) this will give the food time to reach your stomach.

Also you need to pick your battles. I tell myself that I either get alcohol or dessert not both. I personally usually choose dessert. If you choose alcohol limit how much you drink to 2 beers or 2 glasses of wine and one mix drink. For dessert I either get 1 piece of pie or 2 cookies.

3. The bad weather means I can't go outside. So? Find ways to get moving while staying inside. Not every form of exercise needs to be weights and cardio at the gym or with a dvd. I love having game nights!! Yes I am 22 but I don't think I will ever out grow them. So bring out your inner child! Choose games that get you moving. It doesn't matter if your are acting things out or dancing, etc. Just get moving! Quelf is one of my favorites! It's a board game and no only do you have to act things out but it is insanely funny so you will get an extra ab workout in there as well. Or do things with the xbox kinect like kinect sports! There is nothing wrong with a little friendly competition!!


This winter I do NOT want you to go into hibernation!! In this season you are surrounded by not only family and friend but a lot of giving. Without your health you don't have anything! So this cold season give not only yourself but everyone you care about the gift of health.
